Ian has been dealing in antique rugs and textiles for 20 years. He began in the UK, and in 1990 came to Australia, establishing his business in Woollahra that also restores and cleans rugs and textiles.

In 2004 he was part of the organising committee for the International Conference on Oriental Carpets. Ian was co-curator of the Pathways to Paradise exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum and is a Government approved valuer for the Cultural Gifts Program.
