Martin joined Phillips in London in 1979 and later ran the picture department in the north of England. He joined Sotheby's and in 2001 he moved to Australia as their managing director.

In 2003 he set up Martin Gallon Fine Art, specialising in British and European oil paintings and watercolours from the 16th century to the present day. He is a valuer under the Cultural Gifts Program.
