Ross started working in the oriental rug business in 1970 in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1975, he returned to Australia with his wife Irene to establish Nomadic Rug Traders, specialising in antique oriental rugs and carpets, tribal art, and European and South East Asian textiles.

Nomadic Rug Traders also provides services in restoration, cleaning and conservation. Ross is a past president of the ADA (NSW) and the Oriental Rug Society of NSW, a Commonwealth valuer, a governor of the Art Gallery of NSW and an associate of the Powerhouse Museum.
