The Rutherford family business was founded more than 20 years ago by Bruce Rutherford, formerly of Sothebys London, at its location in the "Paris End" of Collins Street. Bruce's son Wesley is now the managing director of Rutherford and his sister Ruth manages the pearl store.

Rutherford has over 50 years personal experience in fine antiques and precious jewellery, specialising in diamonds, English silver from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as South Sea Pearls.
